FIRST MEMORY OF MOM

What is the first memory you have of your mother? Is it clear in your mind or is it a little faded after the years?

This week I wracked my brain attempting to discern my earliest recollection of my mom in my life. I thought she would be in my formative memory bank - when I was three or fours of age. It upset me that she wasn’t. Though my mom was the constant in my life, I cannot remember any defining experience with her until I started to school. In fact, no matter how hard I’ve tried this week, I could not picture her before this defining day.

There are other early memories I have, but not of her. It wasn’t until I started first grade at Wedowee Elementary School that I can see in my mind’s eye my mom taking me to school that first day. She stayed with me for a few hours, making sure I was OK and helping me to learn the word ‘Cat.’ Yes, this was in the days before kindergarten, especially the part of Alabama we lived.

Yet, my mom was the greatest influence of my life. She was the rock of our family. She lived her faith. She gave her life away for others. I don’t think I could have had a more loving and caring mom.

Like a number of you, I’ve entered that season where I’m celebrating Mother’s Day with a white rose - meaning she is no longer here. I miss her, I always will. And I have thousands of other memories of her that I cherish.

So, I encourage everyone to remember their mom and share some touching stories.
Years ago Coach Bear Bryant did a commercial for South Central Bell. He asked, “Have you called your mama today? I sure wish I could call mine.” I know what he means.

Thank God for moms,

Calvin
